Lots of reasons, including:

It's overly commercialised, a bit like Christmas but in some ways even worse.
Try finding a card for a friend of the opposite sex who isn't your significant other, during the first two weeks of February. It's nigh on impossible.
If you hang around with anyone of the opposite sex, people will assume you're going out (this happens at other times of the year as well, but the assumption is much more pronounced in February).
